Welcome back, friends!
If you’re like me, you’re always looking for new ways to keep your chickens happy, healthy, and excited about treat time. While it’s tempting to reach for store-bought snacks, they can be loaded with additives and preservatives—not to mention the price!

Good news: there are tons of natural, nutritious treats that are both budget-friendly and backyard-friendly. Today, we’re diving into the best healthy snack options for your flock—and I’ll share a simple vintage-inspired recipe that your chickens will love!

🌿 Why Natural Treats Matter

Store-bought chicken treats are convenient, but many contain ingredients that aren't the best for your birds. They can be high in sodium, sugar, and preservatives—not ideal for your flock’s long-term health. Natural treats, on the other hand, offer better nutrition, and they’re usually more cost-effective, especially if you grow or forage them yourself.

🥗 Flock-Friendly Natural Treats

Here are some of the healthiest and easiest natural treats to offer your hens:

  • Fruits: Apples (no seeds!), berries, watermelon, and melon are all high in vitamins and antioxidants.

  • Leafy Greens: Kale, spinach, and lettuce provide calcium for strong eggshells and are full of vitamins.

  • Veggies: Sweet potatoes and squash are rich in fiber and nutrients. Serve cooked or raw in small amounts.

  • Grains: Oats, barley, and quinoa are great for digestion and energy.

  • Protein Boosts: Mealworms are a favorite flock snack, packed with protein to support growth and feather health.

  • Seeds: Sunflower seeds (unsalted) are full of healthy fats and help with shiny, strong feathers.

  • Pumpkin: A seasonal favorite—fun to peck at and great for gut health.

🧑‍🍳 Grandma’s Flock Cornbread Crumble

Inspired by old-timey farm cooking

This easy, wholesome recipe is based on traditional Depression-era cornbread, updated just for chickens. It’s a great occasional treat—especially fun to make if you have kids helping in the kitchen!

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup cornmeal

  • ½ cup rolled oats

  • 1 mashed banana (natural sweetness + potassium)

  • 1 egg (for protein)

  • 1 tbsp apple cider vinegar (for gut health)

  • ¾ cup water

  • Optional: A handful of sunflower seeds or chopped kale/spinach

Instructions:

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).

  2. In a mixing bowl, combine cornmeal, oats, and any optional extras.

  3. Stir in mashed banana, egg, apple cider vinegar, and water. Mix well until a thick batter forms.

  4. Pour into a greased or parchment-lined baking pan.

  5. Bake for 20–25 minutes or until golden and firm.

  6. Let it cool completely, then crumble it into small chunks and serve a few pieces at a time.

Note: This is a treat, not a meal replacement—offer it once or twice a week in moderation.
